An Open Letter
To: Rep. Buchanan
From: A constituent in Ruskin, FL
March 12
I am furious—absolutely livid—at your spineless decision to let Trump’s reckless tariffs run wild by sneaking that cowardly amendment into the spending bill. The New York Times laid it bare on March 11: you tucked language into a procedural measure that kills Congress’s power to end this economic trainwreck, all by declaring the rest of the year “one long day” to dodge the National Emergencies Act. What a gutless cop-out! You’ve handed Trump a blank check to tank our economy, and for what? To avoid a tough vote?
These tariffs—25% on Canada and Mexico, 10% on China—are a disaster in the making. Prices will soar, jobs will vanish, and families like mine will pay the price. You had a chance to stop this madness, to use your authority to protect us, but instead, you caved. You’re supposed to represent us, not bow to a bully who doesn’t care about the fallout. The stock market’s already plunging—worst day of 2025, they say—and you’re sitting there, twiddling your thumbs while Trump plays roulette with our livelihoods.
This isn’t leadership; it’s betrayal. You’ve surrendered your duty to check this administration, leaving us defenseless against a policy that even Trump admits could spark a recession. “A little disturbance,” he calls it—tell that to the workers and consumers who’ll suffer while you hide behind this sham amendment. Democrats wanted a vote to kill these tariffs, and you blocked it. Why? Scared of the political heat? Pathetic.
I demand you reverse this. Fight for us, not for Trump’s ego. Strip out that amendment and take back your power before this economic mess gets worse. Do your damn job—or don’t expect my vote next time.
