I am writing to urge you to keep low-dose THC beverages legal. Regulating these products like alcohol is the right path forward. Prohibition will lead to failure. These products are already being enjoyed responsibly by adults in North Carolina, including soccer mom's, veterans and seniors. The impending December 11th ban on low-dose, hemp-derived THC beverages will not remove unsafe products from the marketplace or lessen consumer demand. Instead, it will increase the likelihood that consumers will turn to unregulated channels where age verification, product standards, and enforcement are limited or nonexistent.
North Carolina has approached regulating these beverages within the alcohol system. This ensures that these beverages are only being sold to those over 21 and safety standards are in place.
Instead of prohibition, Congress should create a regulatory framework for low-dose THC beverages. The simplest model is regulating these products just like alcohol. Proper federal safeguards will ensure products are accurately labeled, responsibly sold, and not marketed to children.
Please support a balanced approach to this issue that encourages proper regulation, responsible sales practices, and consumer safety.
Thank you for your consideration,
