Dear Representative,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to House Concurrent Resolution 3013 (HCR 3013), which urges the United States Supreme Court to redefine marriage exclusively as a union between one man and one woman. This resolution not only undermines the rights of countless couples in North Dakota but also poses significant harm to families and individuals across our nation.
The landmark Supreme Court decision in *Obergefell v. Hodges* (2015) recognized the fundamental right of same-sex couples to marry, ensuring that all loving couples receive equal protection under the law. House Concurrent Resolution 3013 seeks to reverse this progress, effectively stripping away the legal recognition and benefits that same-sex couples have rightfully attained.
Marriage provides numerous legal protections and benefits, including inheritance rights, tax benefits, and medical decision-making authority. Denying these rights to same-sex couples fosters inequality and inflicts emotional and financial hardship on families. Such legislative actions can lead to increased stigma and discrimination, adversely affecting the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals.
Moreover, public opinion has evolved significantly over the past decade, with a majority of Americans now supporting marriage equality. Enacting House Concurrent Resolution 3013 would position North Dakota against this prevailing sentiment, potentially deterring businesses and individuals who value inclusivity from engaging with our state.
It is imperative that our laws reflect the principles of fairness and equality. House Concurrent Resolution 3013 represents a regressive step that contradicts these values. I urge you to consider the detrimental impact this resolution would have on our community and to vote against its adoption.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
Sincerely,
A concerned North Dakota citizen
