As a Maryland resident concerned about the devastating impact of gun violence, I urge you to support the Comprehensive Community Safety Funding Act (HB 387). This bill would provide vital funding for gun violence prevention and intervention programs, as well as support for survivors grappling with the immense emotional and financial toll. Gun violence exacts a staggering cost on our state, claiming over 800 lives annually and costing taxpayers an estimated $383.9 million each year. Meanwhile, the very industry fueling this crisis reaps billions in profits. It is only fair that they contribute to addressing the harm their products inflict on our communities. By levying a tax on firearm industry profits, this legislation would generate revenue to fund evidence-based violence reduction strategies and services for those affected. With over $10.5 billion lost to gun violence in Maryland every year, investing in prevention is not only a moral imperative but a sound fiscal policy. I implore you to prioritize the safety and well-being of Marylanders by voting in favor of this crucially important measure. Our communities deserve proven solutions to this preventable crisis. Thank you for your consideration.
