New York state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office has issued a warning letter to 19 technology companies about the impacts of large-scale data centers.  The letter to Amazon can be found below:   "Innovation and modern data infrastructure has become integral to our economy,” DiNapoli said in a statement. “But the rapid buildout of large-scale data centers raises real concerns, including higher electricity bills, costly grid upgrades, water use and impacts on the land in communities across the country." The letter was sent to such industry leaders as Mark Zuckerberg of Meta Platforms and Paul Prager of TeraWulf, Inc., which is building two major data centers in upstate New York. DiNapoli’s letter states he’s concerned that consumers are being forced to subsidize the growth of Big Tech. He’s calling on the companies to adopt a “community-first approach” in which they partner with local communities, operate transparently and pay for their own power and infrastructure. In September 2025, the New York Independent System Operator’s interconnection queue contained approximately 6,800 megawatts of large load projects. In January 2026, the interconnection queue contained approximately 12,000 megawatts of large load projects, most of which are requests from data centers.   An emailed request for comment was sent to TeraWulf.
