Senate Bill 2554 would transfer over 115,000 acres of the Tongass National Forest into private ownership— triggering the largest wave of industrial logging in Southeast Alaska in decades.
While the “Landless” bill is being supported by organizations like The Wilderness Society and The Nature Conservancy under the framing of “land back,” it does not return land to tribal governments.
Instead, it transfers land to for-profit Native corporations.
These corporations are legally obligated to maximize shareholder value—creating strong financial pressure to log these forests. This concern is reinforced by the location of selected lands, which include some of the most commercially valuable timber stands, often far from the communities they are said to benefit.
This bill has already passed out of the House of Representatives and the Senate Natural Resources Committee. It is closer than it ever has been to becoming law and we need everyone to. SPEAK UP!
📣 TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION and oppose this bill. Ask them to protect public lands and the remaining old-growth forests of the Tongass.
