An Open Letter
To: Gov. Murphy
From: A verified voter in Red Bank, NJ
January 19
I am writing as a Red Bank resident to urge you to sign the immigrant-protection bills recently passed by the New Jersey Legislature. Ongoing ICE enforcement actions across the state have created deep fear and instability in communities like ours, particularly on Red Bank’s west side, where many immigrant families live and work.
Parents are afraid to walk their children to school, workers hesitate to show up to their jobs, and neighbors worry that any routine errand could end in detention. This fear undermines public safety, community trust, and the sense of belonging that makes towns like Red Bank thrive.
The package of legislation awaiting your signature would provide clear, lawful protections for New Jersey residents by strengthening limits on local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, safeguarding sensitive personal data, and reinforcing trust between immigrant communities and state and local institutions. These measures do not interfere with federal law; they simply ensure that New Jersey remains a place where people can access schools, health care, and public services without fear.
You own a home across the Navesink River from neighborhoods directly affected by these raids. I hope that proximity underscores the urgency of this moment and the real human impact these policies have on families who are our neighbors.
I respectfully ask you to sign these bills into law without delay. Doing so would affirm New Jersey’s commitment to fairness, dignity, and community safety for everyone who calls this state home.
Thank you for your leadership and consideration.
