Protect due process for nonprofits, revise revocation bill

To: Rep. Zinke

From: A verified voter in Missoula, MT

November 18

The proposed legislation to terminate the tax-exempt status of organizations deemed "terrorist supporting" raises significant concerns about due process and the arbitrary removal of a fundamental legal protection. Revoking an organization's tax-exempt status, a benefit granted under strict criteria, should not be done in an overly broad or poorly defined manner. There must be robust procedural safeguards and clear standards to prevent abuse. While the intent may be to counter financing of extremist groups, this approach risks unfairly penalizing legitimate non-profit organizations based on vague or unsubstantiated allegations. It undermines principles of free association and opens the door to potential political targeting of disfavored groups. There are already laws against providing material support to terrorist organizations that can be enforced through proper legal channels. I urge you to consider these civil liberties implications carefully. Stripping tax exemptions without sufficient due process protections is an overreach that could jeopardize the ability of nonprofits to operate and advocate freely in America. This bill requires significant revisions or should not proceed in its current form to uphold constitutional principles and protect law-abiding organizations from arbitrary government action.
