A few years ago, I needed to provide my birth certificate for something important. Luckily, I knew where my birth certificate was and was able to produce it easily. But here's what happened: the official-seeming document that I had was a Certificate of Birth Registration, not an actual birth certificate. I had to send away for an actual birth certificate, which I could only do by mail (with some internet assistance), which added to the timeline of the task that I needed the certificate for. I mention all of this because I have serious concerns about the SAVE Act. Many people trying to provide a birth certificate to prove citizenship status might run into an issue like the one I ran into. If you're thinking, "well, then just get a passport!" please keep in mind that the cost is prohibitive for some, plus an individual never actually knows how long it'll take for the passport to arrive. Requirements like these are burdensome and would greatly lower the rates of voting for all political parties. Add to this the issues of women who changed their names when they married--I didn't, but plenty of my conservative voter friends did. It's not right. But most of all--if you are at all inclined to support the SAVE act anyway, please make sure to examine whether noncitizen voting is an actual problem. I highly recommend
"Four Things to Know About Noncitizen Voting" from The Bipartisan Policy Center. Cliff note: documented cases are extremely low. Vote NO on the SAVE act for the good of voters from all ends of the political spectrum.
