Block Funding for Forest Service Reorganization

To: Rep. Lee, Sen. Cortez Masto, Sen. Rosen

From: A constituent in Las Vegas, NV

April 11

I need you to block all funding for the Forest Service reorganization that will relocate headquarters to Salt Lake City, shut down ten regional offices, and dismantle more than fifty research facilities across thirty-one states. This is not reform. It's a deliberate strategy to gut the agency that manages 193 million acres of our national forests. When the BLM headquarters moved during Trump's first term, 87% of staff were lost. Of 328 positions ordered to relocate, only 41 employees moved at all. The same will happen here, and that's the point: purge career professionals and replace them with fifteen political appointees embedded in state capitals alongside industry lobbyists. Utah is already suing to seize 18.5 million acres of public land, and Senator Mike Lee has spent his career trying to dismantle public land protections. Putting Forest Service headquarters there hands control to the very interests trying to liquidate these forests. The consolidation will destroy decades of irreplaceable ecological research. Watershed studies, old-growth monitoring programs, and ecosystem research depend on specific locations. When these facilities close, experiments die and datasets end. Demand congressional oversight hearings and refuse to appropriate funds for this move. These forests belong to the public, not the timber industry.
