While efforts to redraw congressional district maps ahead of elections can aim to secure partisan advantages, such blatant gerrymandering undermines principles of fair representation and equal protection under the law. The Republican proposals for Ohio and Texas appear designed to entrench their U.S. House majority by packing Democratic voters into a minimal number of districts, diluting the voice of the majority. This threatens the integrity of our elections and is an affront to core democratic values. This is a blatant attempt to hold power by Republicans, and an attempt to silence the will of the people. This is an alarming, authoritarian power grab. We the People deserve free and fair elections! We must insist on non-partisan redistricting processes that respect community boundaries and the rights of all citizens to have their vote carry equal weight. Unchecked gerrymandering erodes faith in our system of government.
