Request for Congressional Action Regarding the Insurrection Act

To: Sen. Smith, Sen. Klobuchar, Rep. Omar

From: A constituent in Minneapolis, MN

January 15

I am a constituent from Minneapolis, MN, and I am writing to urge you to take an active role in challenging and overseeing the President’s invocation of the Insurrection Act. President Trump has proven he will continue to escalate his tactics to terrorize our state. Your constituents need you to create as many roadblocks as possible within your power. The Insurrection Act grants the executive branch extraordinary authority to deploy military forces domestically. Regardless of one’s political views, this power deserves rigorous congressional oversight to ensure it is used lawfully, narrowly, and in accordance with constitutional principles, including federalism and civil liberties. I respectfully ask that you consider taking one or more of the following actions: • Demand a clear public legal and factual justification for the invocation • Support or introduce legislation to limit, reform, or place time bounds on the Insurrection Act • Use Congress’s oversight authority to hold hearings or request relevant executive branch documents • Oppose or restrict funding for domestic military deployments that exceed statutory or constitutional limits Congress has an independent duty to check the use of emergency powers, especially when they affect civilian governance and the use of force within the United States. I urge you to exercise that responsibility. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I would appreciate knowing what steps you plan to take.
