I am deeply concerned about the recent removal of General Timothy Haugh as head of U.S. Cyber Command and the National Security Agency—two of the most critical national security posts in the United States. Reports suggest this decision was influenced by political activist Laura Loomer, who is neither an intelligence expert nor an elected official, and who is reportedly attempting to place political loyalists in key government positions. This signals a dangerous politicization of our intelligence and cyber defense operations, which have historically remained nonpartisan and grounded in national interest.
As former Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall warned, these positions control some of the most powerful tools in the world for gathering intelligence and defending U.S. infrastructure. Their use is rightly constrained by law, particularly to protect American citizens and businesses. Replacing a seasoned and qualified leader like General Haugh with someone who may lack that commitment to legal restraint endangers our national security and the privacy of U.S. citizens. I urge Congress to investigate the circumstances of this dismissal and reaffirm the importance of experienced, apolitical leadership in our intelligence and cybersecurity agencies.
