I am writing to express my strong opposition to HB 244 and any legislative efforts that seek to undermine Ohio’s public health by encouraging vaccine exemptions.
Vaccines are a proven public benefit, backed by overwhelming scientific evidence showing they are safe and effective. It is the fundamental responsibility of the state government to protect the health of all Ohioans—especially the most vulnerable among us, such as the immunocompromised and infants, who cannot be vaccinated and rely on the herd immunity provided by the rest of the community.
By requiring schools to affirmatively remind parents of opt-out rights, the legislature is effectively providing excuses for parents to disregard science and put the entire community at risk. This is particularly reckless given the recent outbreaks of preventable diseases like measles within our state.
Our state’s education system should be used to provide factual, science-based information, not to facilitate the spread of misinformation. In fact, if the state is to allow exemptions, it should require parents to complete a mandatory educational course explaining:
- The rigorous scientific testing behind vaccines.
- The severe medical risks of the diseases these vaccines prevent.
- The danger their choice poses to the public health of their fellow citizens.
The state should be in the business of protecting children's right to a healthy environment, not emboldening parents to make decisions that put their own children and their peers in harm's way. I urge you to stand with science and the medical community by opposing this dangerous legislation.
