Remove ALEC from Utah's official summer legislative calendar immediately, stop attending their conventions, and publicly apologize to Utah's women, LGBTQ community, and other minority communities for your participation in an organization that has actively worked to strip them of political power.
ALEC is not a mainstream policy group. It ran a secret "Political Process Working Group" to spread disinformation about election results, coordinated with Cleta Mitchell — who advised Trump's effort to overturn Georgia's 2020 election — and in 2021 was identified in a Heritage Action memo as a key partner in a multi-year campaign to push voter suppression laws. More than 100 ALEC-connected state legislators sponsored bills restricting voting access across Georgia, Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Texas that same year. One of ALEC's own founders stated plainly that he did not want everyone to vote. That is not a fringe quote — it is the organization's operating philosophy.
Utah taxpayers should not be subsidizing attendance at conventions run by an organization that has defended racial gerrymanders struck down as unconstitutional and instructed legislators how to obscure their redistricting work from the public. Cut all ties with ALEC and make clear that Utah's legislature serves all its residents — not a national network of wealthy conservative donors working to concentrate power at everyone else's expense.
