I am writing to urge you to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump based on his threats of military force and economic warfare against Denmark, a founding NATO member, over his stated grievance about not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. On Sunday night, Trump sent a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre explicitly stating that because Norway did not award him the Nobel Peace Prize, he no longer feels obligated to think purely of peace. He wrote: "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace." This admission that personal grievance is driving foreign policy represents a fundamental betrayal of his oath of office. Trump has announced 10% tariffs on eight NATO allies starting February 1, escalating to 25% on June 1, until Denmark agrees to sell Greenland. When asked by NBC News on Monday whether he would use military force to seize Greenland, he refused to rule it out, stating "No comment." These actions threaten the NATO alliance that has maintained European security for 75 years and protected American interests without requiring constant military deployment. The European Union has scheduled an emergency summit for Thursday to address these threats. Eight NATO countries have issued a joint statement warning that Trump's actions "undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral." We are approaching a constitutional crisis where the President is threatening war with democratic allies over a personal slight regarding a prize awarded by an independent Norwegian committee that has no government affiliation. This is not a policy disagreement. This is a President who has explicitly stated he is abandoning peaceful diplomacy because he did not receive an award. I urge you to support articles of impeachment immediately to prevent irreparable damage to our alliances and potential armed conflict with Denmark.
