Preserve affordable healthcare for dedicated North Carolina educators.
To: Sen. Hollo, Gov. Stein, Rep. Hall

The proposed changes to set health insurance premiums based on salary tiers for North Carolina state employees raise significant concerns for educators. Increasing premiums, especially for veteran teachers with higher salaries, risks pricing them out of the profession at a time when we already face a teacher shortage crisis. Rather than balancing the budget deficit on the backs of hardworking educators, the state should explore alternative solutions that do not jeopardize affordable health care access for those tasked with educating our children. Teachers dedicate their careers to nurturing the next generation, often sacrificing higher salaries available in the private sector. Maintaining quality, affordable health benefits is crucial to attracting and retaining talented educators. Dismantling this vital component of their compensation package threatens to exacerbate the exodus of experienced teachers from our classrooms. Instead of burdening educators with rising costs, the state should prioritize increasing overall education funding to sustainable levels that can maintain competitive salaries and benefits. Exploring cost-saving measures within the health plan's administration or negotiating better rates with providers may present more equitable paths forward. Ultimately, investing in our teachers is an investment in the future of our state and its children. I urge you to advocate for solutions that preserve quality, affordable health care for all our educators, from new hires to veteran faculty members. Their dedication to shaping young minds deserves our support, not increased financial strain. Please prioritize people over profits when deliberating these critical decisions.
