Change the Second and Fourteenth amendments at the same time!

To: Sen. Warner, Rep. Beyer, Sen. Kaine

From: A constituent in Arlington, VA

April 4

As your constituent, I am writing to propose a bold legislative path to address two of the most divisive issues in our current political landscape: the Second and Fourteenth Amendments. Our nation is currently paralyzed by a "zero-sum" mentality regarding these rights. However, I believe there is an opportunity to break this stalemate through a linked constitutional update that addresses the core concerns of both sides of the aisle. I urge you to consider a "Grand Bargain" amendment package that achieves the following: • Modernizing the Second Amendment: We must move past the "militia" debate to explicitly protect the individual right of law-abiding citizens to own firearms for self-defense, sporting, and tradition. Simultaneously, this update should provide a clear constitutional framework for "well-regulated" safety standards—such as uniform training requirements and secure storage—ensuring public safety without infringing on the core right. • Updating the Fourteenth Amendment: The historical conditions that necessitated broad birthright citizenship have changed. We should establish modern criteria for citizenship at birth that require at least one parent to be a citizen or legal permanent resident. This would end the practice of "birth tourism" and align our policies with those of most other developed nations, ensuring orderly, sustainable population growth. By linking these two updates, you can offer the American people a rare win-win: stronger, clearer protection for gun owners and a more secure, logical definition of national citizenship. Using our current divisions as a catalyst for these significant improvements would demonstrate the kind of visionary leadership our country desperately needs. I would appreciate knowing your thoughts on such a balanced approach to constitutional reform.
