Extend ACA Subsidies to Prevent Healthcare Crisis
To: Rep. McClellan, Sen. Warner, Sen. Kaine
From: A constituent in Richmond, VA
November 9
I am writing to urge you to stand firm in negotiations and refuse to approve any budget that does not include an extension of the Affordable Care Act's enhanced premium tax credits (ePTCs) beyond 2025. This is a critical issue that affects millions of Americans, including many in your district, and it deserves immediate attention. Recent polling data from a KFF Health Tracking Poll conducted from October 27 to November 2, 2025, shows overwhelming public support for extending these vital subsidies. A significant 74% of U.S. adults favor the continuation of ePTCs. This support crosses party lines, with 94% of Democrats, 76% of independents, and even 50% of Republicans in favor. The potential expiration of these subsidies poses a serious threat to healthcare affordability and access. If ePTCs are not extended, many of your constituents could face substantial increases in their health insurance costs. The poll indicates that for 59% of Democratic voters and 54% of independent voters, a $1,000 increase in healthcare costs would have a major impact on their voting decisions. This underscores the urgency and political importance of this issue. I understand that there is pressure to end the government shutdown quickly. However, I believe that ensuring affordable healthcare for Americans is worth the temporary inconvenience. The poll shows that 48% of the public agrees that Congressional Democrats should refuse to approve a budget without ePTC extension, even if it prolongs the shutdown. It's crucial to note that awareness of this issue remains limited, with 57% of adults having heard little or nothing about the lapsing ePTCs. As our representative, you have the opportunity and responsibility to educate constituents about this impending crisis and take decisive action to prevent it. The Democratic Party currently holds an edge in voter trust for handling the ACA's future (43% vs. 32% for Republicans) and addressing high health insurance costs (39% vs. 33%). By taking a strong stance on this issue, you can reinforce this trust and demonstrate your commitment to affordable healthcare. I implore you to prioritize the extension of ACA subsidies in budget negotiations. The health and financial well-being of your constituents depend on your leadership in this critical moment. Please do not compromise on this essential aspect of healthcare policy.
