Urgent: Restore Support for AmeriCorps Volunteers on Hurricane Helene Recovery
To: Sen. Tillis, Rep. Edwards, Sen. Budd
From: A constituent in Asheville, NC
April 20
I am writing as a concerned constituent regarding the recent loss of 52 AmeriCorps volunteers who were working on Hurricane Helene recovery efforts. The removal or defunding of these critical positions is a devastating blow—not just to the affected communities, but to the very spirit of national service and civic responsibility that AmeriCorps represents.
How can we, as a nation, justify pulling support from communities still grappling with the aftermath of a natural disaster? These volunteers were not just numbers—they were boots on the ground, helping rebuild homes, restore hope, and strengthen resilience. Their absence will be deeply felt, and the communities they served will be left more vulnerable because of it.
AmeriCorps is one of our most effective tools for disaster recovery, especially in areas that often lack the resources or visibility to attract sustained support. The loss of these volunteers sends a chilling message about our nation’s commitment to recovery, resilience, and community care.
I urge you to fight for the restoration of these positions and funding for AmeriCorps disaster recovery efforts. These young people are willing to serve—what they need is your support to keep serving.
Please stand up for them. Please stand up for Helene survivors. We cannot afford this kind of loss.
