Lawmakers denied tour of Baltimore ICE detention facility July 2025

July 30

I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the stand you took on July 28–29, 2025, when you and Maryland’s congressional delegation attempted to inspect the ICE holding facility in the George H. Fallon Federal Building in Baltimore and were denied entry even though, by law, members of Congress have the right to conduct unannounced oversight visits to such facilities. Your actions were a clear assertion of responsibility to ensure humane conditions, especially in light of reports that detainees are being held for days in windowless “hold rooms” beyond the 12-hour limit, without proper medical care or access to counsel. By publicly challenging the refusal, emphasizing that the facility is more than just an office but effectively a holding location, and demanding transparency, you upheld the principles of justice and accountability that Maryland deserves. Your statement helped shine a spotlight on conditions that may otherwise remain hidden. Thank you for exercising your oversight powers, for insisting on dignity and due process for all those detained, and for highlighting these critical issues in the public forum. Your leadership in defending constitutional rights and prioritizing human decency during this oversight matter is deeply appreciated.
