I urge you to oppose the SAVE Act. The right to vote is a foundational principle of our democracy, and this bill poses a serious threat to that right for millions of eligible American voters.
The SAVE Act is a voter suppression measure disguised as an effort to prevent noncitizens from voting which is a problem that is virtually nonexistent. Even the Heritage Foundation, which supports stricter voting laws, has found only three instances of noncitizen voting in our state since the 1980s. The real purpose of this legislation is to erect barriers that make it harder for Americans to vote, particularly in communities that already face systemic challenges.
If passed, the SAVE Act would disproportionately impact women (especially those who changed their name after marriage), low-income individuals, rural voters, people of color, and members of the military. Requiring burdensome documentation and limiting mail-in voting would disenfranchise voters who are already more likely to face logistical hurdles. This is not a measure to protect democracy but rather a calculated attempt to manipulate electoral outcomes by suppressing voter turnout.
Other developed countries have better access to the ballot box. Many automatically register citizens to vote. We should be doing the same, not making it harder for Americans to exercise their constitutional rights.
Don’t be misled by false narratives about voter fraud. Noncitizen voting is already illegal and extremely rare. If the roles were reversed, and your constituents were the ones being disenfranchised, would that be acceptable?
Please stand up for democracy and vote NO on the SAVE Act.
