Reject bill revoking nonprofits' tax status without due process
To: Rep. Pelosi
From: A constituent in San Francisco, CA
November 20
I'm urging you to oppose H.R. 9495, the bill that would give the executive branch sweeping powers to investigate and potentially revoke the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations like civil liberties groups, universities, and news outlets. A coalition of over 200 organizations spanning civil rights, religious, reproductive health, immigrant rights, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+, environmental, and education groups have expressed grave concerns about this legislation. Revoking an organization's tax-exempt status based solely on allegations from the executive branch, without due process, poses a severe threat to free speech and dissent. It would enable the administration to crack down on any group it perceives as critical, effectively silencing voices across the political spectrum. Nonprofits play a vital role in our democracy by fostering public discourse, advocating for various causes, and holding power to account. Undermining their ability to operate freely jeopardizes fundamental rights. This bill grants the executive branch dangerous, unchecked authority that could be abused for political purposes against disfavored groups. It fails to provide sufficient safeguards or clear standards to prevent such overreach. I urge you to stand against this blatant attempt to stifle civil society and protect the constitutional rights of nonprofit organizations to freely express dissent without fear of retaliation or harassment from the government. Reject H.R. 9495.
