As advocates for improving access to mental health care, we urge you to support policies that expand the use of telehealth services. Despite growing demand, many communities across the country lack sufficient mental health providers, leaving individuals unable to receive the care they need. Telehealth has emerged as an effective solution, allowing patients and providers to connect remotely through telecommunications technology. Telehealth eliminates barriers like transportation issues and increases treatment continuity by reducing missed appointments. It also improves access to culturally competent clinicians and specialists for underserved populations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, temporary flexibilities enabled wider telehealth coverage, proving its value in providing timely and safe mental health care. While some may require in-person services, telehealth should be permanently available to offer a range of accessible options, especially for those who have gained access to treatment only through telehealth during the pandemic. We ask that you prioritize strengthening and expanding telehealth coverage across all health plans, including allowing reimbursement for new patients. Providers and insurers should also prioritize robust privacy protocols. Further research is needed on optimal treatment modalities, but telehealth is a crucial tool for improving mental health care access that should be supported through policy change.
