Vote No on Constitutional Amendment B — Protect Simple Majority Rights

To: Gov. Cox, Rep. Dunnigan, Sen. Harper

From: A verified voter in West Jordan, UT

October 7

Vote no on Constitutional Amendment B. This measure would rig the rules against ordinary Utahns by requiring citizen-initiated tax measures to clear a 60% supermajority, while the legislature can change the tax code with a simple majority vote any day of the week. That double standard is the whole problem. As Rep. Andrew Stoddard put it: "It's unfair for us to say, 'Hey citizens, you require a higher threshold when you're raising taxes.' We're not imposing the same requirement on us as legislators." He's right. The initiative process already has significant safeguards — gathering signatures, qualifying for the ballot — before a single vote is cast. Stacking a supermajority requirement on top of that doesn't protect taxpayers; it protects the legislature from accountability. Vote no on Amendment B and keep the simple majority standard that treats voters and legislators equally.
