An Open Letter

To: Gov. Stein, Sen. Alexander, Rep. Rhyne

From: A constituent in Denver, NC

June 15

The new bill dropped Friday night is a shame and a disgrace to our great state. It attempts to curb voting rather than encourage it, to make SBE communications secret and makes the staff overtly partisan. Key Points: - The Executive Director of the State Board of Elections would gain 25 new partisan employees and its own counsel rather than the AG’s office. - Election officials would be banned from encouraging voter turnout. - Ranked-choice voting would be outlawed statewide - Communications inside the SBE would be deemed exempt from the Public Records Act. - Candidates for office would have to be registered members of a party for 365 days prior to filing their notice of candidacy rather than 90. This proposed bill is fundamentally anti-democratic and should be opposed by every fair minded individual. Thank you for your consideration.
