Preserve Harvard's academic freedom, reject revoking tax-exempt status

The actions being threatened against Harvard University are unacceptable violations of academic freedom and the First Amendment. Revoking the tax-exempt status of an institution based on political disagreements sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the foundations of higher education in America. Universities must maintain their independence to foster critical thinking, diverse perspectives, and the pursuit of knowledge free from government overreach or retaliation. Stripping federal funding as punishment for exercising constitutional rights is a destructive attack on free speech that will severely impair Harvard's ability to provide quality education, drive innovation through research, and prepare future leaders. This heavy-handed approach does not address legitimate concerns about campus climate in a constructive manner. Rather than coercion, substantive dialogue and good-faith efforts to enact reasonable reforms within the boundaries of the law are needed. Preserving public universities' tax-exempt status and autonomy is essential for upholding democratic values and advancing society through the free exchange of ideas. I urge you to reject any efforts to revoke Harvard's privileges and instead work collaboratively to ensure all voices can be heard on campus while protecting students from discrimination.
