Reject harmful 287(g) agreement harming community trust
To: Gov. Ayotte
From: A constituent in Hollis, NH
June 10
The Trump administration's push for increased immigration enforcement through programs like 287(g) agreements is deeply concerning. By deputizing local law enforcement to act as immigration agents, it sows mistrust between communities and the police meant to serve them. When immigrant residents fear routine interactions could lead to detention and deportation, they become less likely to report crimes or cooperate with authorities. This undermines public safety for all. Furthermore, immigration is a federal responsibility that should not be foisted upon localities lacking training and resources. Local police enforcing complex immigration laws they are ill-equipped to interpret opens the door to racial profiling and civil rights violations. Law enforcement should focus on keeping communities safe, not ripping families apart over civil immigration violations. Rather than joining this misguided crackdown, New Hampshire should invest in policies that integrate immigrants and make all residents feel secure. Diverting limited resources away from local priorities hurts everyone. I urge you to reconsider this harmful 287(g) agreement that damages community trust and endangers public safety.
