Defend the 22nd Amendment and two-term presidential tradition

To: Rep. Haridopolos, Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott

From: A constituent in Indialantic, FL

April 14

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution unambiguously prohibits any individual from being elected President more than twice. Attempting to circumvent or amend this provision would undermine a core democratic principle - the peaceful transfer of power enforced by term limits. While Trump continues to flout norms by teasing an unlawful third term, Congress must reaffirm its commitment to upholding the Constitution. I urge you to publicly denounce any efforts to repeal the 22nd Amendment or convene a constitutional convention for this purpose. Doing so would set a dangerous precedent of revising founding principles for political expediency. The American people deserve leaders devoted to fortifying, not dismantling, our democratic institutions and the rule of law. Safeguarding the two-term tradition ultimately protects the will of the people and shores up faith in our electoral system. I hope you will take a stand against Trump's authoritarian overtures and work to reinforce the Constitution's robust system of checks and balances. Our democracy depends on it.
