Reject bill stripping tax exemption for controversial views
To: Rep. Edwards
From: A constituent in Sylva, NC
November 18
The proposed legislation to terminate the tax-exempt status of organizations deemed to be providing material support to terrorist groups is a concerning overreach that threatens fundamental rights like freedom of speech and association. While combating terrorism is a valid goal, revoking an organization's tax-exempt status based on an opaque designation process and without due process raises significant civil liberties concerns. This bill grants the Treasury Secretary broad powers to unilaterally label groups as "terrorist supporting organizations" and strip them of their tax-exempt status, potentially impacting a wide range of advocacy groups, charities and non-profits. The vague criteria and lack of robust appeals mechanisms create a chilling effect on legitimate speech and activism. Tax-exemption should not be wielded as a policy weapon against disfavored ideological views. I urge you to reject this erosion of constitutional protections under the guise of national security. There are better ways to counter violent extremism that do not trample on core American values of free expression and association. This bill's overreach threatens to undermine the very principles of openness and democracy it purports to defend. Please vote against this dangerous legislation.
