I am writing to you today to demand the repeal of HB 87 and other online ID verification laws that were recently passed in Ohio.
These laws are a violation of citizens' right to privacy online, as they mandate handing over sensitive data to websites to access adult content, to be stored in a database that could be the victim of ever increasing data breaches.
While protecting children from content they shouldn't be looking at is important, it must be done with respect for the rights of adults, like me, to access content freely online. It should be on the parents to utilize tools/filters to protect their kids from accessing this content, not the state or private companies.
Multiple privacy organizations/watchdogs have denounced laws like the ones passed in Ohio, and widespread opposition in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and in the U.S. at the state level and national, show these laws are widely unpopular and out of step with the majority of Americans.
I demand you to repeal these anti-democratic, overreaching ID verification laws and let the internet be free for all adults to access.
