Extend ACA Marketplace Subsidies to End Shutdown and Protect Healthcare

To: Sen. Tillis, Sen. Budd, Rep. Edwards

From: A constituent in Sylva, NC

November 6

The ongoing government shutdown, now in its 36th day, is causing significant harm to our nation. Flight cancellations, delayed SNAP benefits, and missed paychecks for federal workers are just a few of the consequences we're facing. At the heart of this impasse is the critical issue of expiring subsidies for health insurance premiums purchased on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace. I urge you to support the extension of these vital ACA subsidies. This is not just a matter of political debate; it's about protecting the health and financial security of millions of Americans. The ACA has become an integral part of our healthcare system since its signing in 2010, and its growing popularity is evident. Recent polls show that a majority of Americans support extending these subsidies. The impact of allowing these subsidies to expire would be severe. Many of your constituents rely on these subsidies to afford their health insurance. Without them, we risk seeing a spike in uninsured rates and a destabilization of the insurance market. This could lead to higher premiums for everyone, not just those directly affected by the subsidy expiration. While I understand there may be differing views on the ACA, even some Republicans are now calling for the preservation of these subsidies due to concerns from their constituents. This demonstrates the broad, bipartisan recognition of the subsidies' importance. The current shutdown is already causing significant economic damage. Extending these subsidies would not only end the shutdown but also provide certainty and stability for millions of Americans as we approach the end of the year. It's a win-win solution that addresses both immediate and long-term concerns. I ask that you take immediate action to support the extension of ACA marketplace subsidies. This is an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, prioritize the health of your constituents, and bring an end to this damaging government shutdown. The 2026 midterm elections may seem distant, but voters will remember who stood up for their healthcare needs during this critical time. Time is of the essence. Please work across the aisle to find a solution that extends these crucial subsidies and reopens our government. The health and well-being of your constituents depend on your swift action.
