Senator Mike Lee’s public response to the assassination of two Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota was disgraceful. While he demanded full accountability after the Trump assassination attempt, he responded to the murders of his political colleagues with mockery, misinformation, and partisan jabs.
This kind of behavior is not just unacceptable — it is dangerous. Political violence should never be trivialized, no matter who the victims are. By treating these killings as a joke and using them for political gain, Senator Lee is fueling division in a country already on edge.
This double standard discredits his calls for justice and exposes a deeper issue: when violence targets people he disagrees with, he downplays or ridicules it. That is not the conduct of a public servant. It is the behavior of someone contributing to political extremism and legitimizing violence through silence or sarcasm.
Senator Lee’s actions reflect a total lack of leadership, integrity, and basic decency. He is not fit to represent Utah or the American people. The Senate must not tolerate this kind of rhetoric from its members.
I urge you to take action. Senator Lee should be publicly censured for his behavior. If he refuses to change course, the Senate should explore expulsion proceedings. At the very least, his colleagues must speak up and make it clear that this behavior is not representative of our values or the responsibilities of his office.
Political violence must be condemned — always. If our elected leaders cannot meet that basic standard, they have no place in government.
