The Arizona Republican legislature has chosen to pass two bills related to energy infrastructure development in Arizona. I ask you to please veto these bills.
They have passed:
- SB 1538 requiring a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility from the AZ Corporation Commission to develop solar/wind generation and storage and
- HB 2774 which removes the requirement for a CEC, as well as the need for local zoning approval, for nuclear generation.
Put another way, the AZ Legislature wants to regulate the energy source that requires no fuel, no water, and no emissions to operate (solar, wind, energy storage) while simultaneously deregulating the energy source requiring a fuel with a radioactive half-life lasting 24,000 years (nuclear).
This is not what's best for the people or the environment of Arizona. We need to be quickly transitioning to renewable energy to protect our environment. Adding more onerous requirements for them is just meant to make that harder, not a real effort to protect the environment. This is clearly shown by the effort to deregulate other sources, such as nuclear, at the same time. Nuclear is important but Arizona is already heavily invested in it, and any future development of nuclear power definitely needs oversight since it is so potentially dangerous, risky, and impactful on the environment even if it is goes to plan since it uses large amounts of land and water (even if it's wastewater), requires clearing for large transmission lines, and ejects heat and steam into our atmosphere.
Thank you for your hard stance in defending the state budget. Please continue to veto bills that are not in the interest of Arizonans, such as the bills described above.
