Restrict Glyphosate Use in Food Crops to Protect Public Health

To: Rep. Zinke, Sen. Daines, Sen. Sheehy

From: A constituent in Clinton, MT

May 7

I need you to support stricter regulations on glyphosate use in food production. This herbicide is sprayed on over 300 million pounds of crops annually in the U.S., and it's showing up in our food, water, and bodies with serious health consequences. Glyphosate was patented as an antibiotic in 2010 because it kills bacteria. That's a problem when 70% of our immune system lives in our gut. Research shows it destroys beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria while allowing harmful bacteria like Clostridium difficile to thrive. It increases intestinal permeability, reduces production of essential B vitamins and serotonin, and disrupts metabolism in ways that contribute to obesity and metabolic disorders. The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen, with links to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It's also associated with higher rates of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and acts as an endocrine disruptor affecting critical hormones. We can't avoid this chemical when it's sprayed on conventional grains before harvest, absorbed into fruits and vegetables from contaminated soil and water, and present in our drinking water. We need regulations that protect public health, not just corporate profits. Ban pre-harvest spraying and restrict glyphosate use on food crops.
