After the Supreme Court gutted Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder in 2013, the racial turnout gap grew almost twice as much in states formerly covered by Section 5. We’ve seen an alarming rise in state-level efforts to suppress the vote – more than 100 new laws restricting voting access have been enacted nationwide. And this year, Congress is weighing a federal voter suppression bill called the SAVE Act that would harm tens of millions.
Everyone deserves equal access to the ballot box, but what’s left of the Voting Rights Act is not enough to defend the freedom to vote. The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – a bill with support from both Republican and Democratic voters – would protect voters from discrimination and strengthen our democracy.
As your constituent, I’m asking you to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and do everything in your power to ensure its swift passage. The future of our democracy depends on it.
