Gig workers like delivery drivers for DoorDash, GrubHub etc are being exploited by these parent companies. There are very few worker protections in place, and they do not have the power to unionize to demand better rights due to being contract workers. Often times the pay is very misleading, it will promise that there is a “base rate” but that is not always the case and often times the pay is less than the cost It takes to actually deliver the items in question. These companies, allegedly are relying on their customers to tip their workers, however the customers are hostile and tip low if at all, which means these companies are getting away with practically free labor. This has to be a labor violation. It is unjust. It is taking advantage of individuals who are already financially struggling because there is no other motivation to participate in this kind of work. There needs to be transparency about pay and a flat rate paid. I know for a fact that they are already charging for delivery fees and yet the driver isn’t getting it. The driver isn’t even guaranteed a base rate per order delivered, which again is unjust and corrupt. There needs to be someone who will fight for the lower and middle class gig workers who are struggling, because these corporations will not change unless they are held accountable. These delivery drivers are subject To not just bad pay, but also hostile customers and often unsafe situations and we have no worker protections. We either need higher and transparent base pay or have the ability to unionize. Because if we were truly contract workers than we would have control over the rates set per order that these companies would have to pay. We are being taken advantage of and we need to have the power to use our collective resources to demand better treatment or intervention from higher powers such as the government to remand rights For this class of workers. It is undeniable that we are in a cost of living crisis and no one deserves to have to pay to work. (I.e. It often costs more to deliver an order than you receive in turn for customers who are angry that You’re even delivering to them.) we need worker protections, and we need pay transparency. Thank you for your time.
