Constitutional Crisis
To: Mayor Johnston
From: A constituent in Denver, CO
February 25, 2025
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding President Trump’s extreme budget proposal, the mass termination of federal employees, the threat to our nation’s public lands, and the ongoing attacks on fundamental rights, including access to Medicaid and voting protections. These actions contradict the principles of good governance, economic stability, and constitutional democracy. The proposed budget includes devastating cuts to essential federal agencies, leading to the resignation of numerous civil servants who refuse to participate in the dismantling of public services. The chaotic approach to mass firings, particularly under the direction of Elon Musk in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has created instability and legal uncertainty across federal agencies. This kind of reckless governance not only threatens livelihoods but also weakens our nation’s institutional integrity. Additionally, I am deeply alarmed by threats to Medicaid, a program that provides healthcare to millions of Americans, including children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Gutting this essential program would leave countless families without access to life-saving medical care, further exacerbating inequality and economic hardship. Protecting Medicaid is not just a policy choice—it is a moral imperative. Furthermore, I strongly oppose the SAVE Act, a misguided piece of legislation that would disenfranchise millions of American citizens under the guise of election security. The burdens it would impose, particularly on married women who change their names, elderly voters, and those without immediate access to extensive documentation, are a direct assault on our democratic principles. Voting is a fundamental right, not a privilege subject to arbitrary barriers. This country has fought too hard to ensure access to the ballot box for all citizens to allow such blatant voter suppression to take hold. Both you and President Trump swore an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. That includes protecting the right to vote, ensuring equal access to government programs, and safeguarding the public trust. The extreme budget cuts, mass firings, attacks on Medicaid, and attempts to rig elections through voter suppression are all antithetical to that oath. I urge you to honor your commitment to the Constitution by rejecting these policies and standing up for the rights and well-being of the American people. Thank you for your time and attention to these urgent matters. I look forward to your response and to seeing you take action in defense of our democracy.
