Pass strong consumer protection legislation to ban surveillance pricing and stop corporations from using AI to pick my pocket. Companies are partnering with data brokers — firms that hold profiles on 95% of American adults — to personalize prices to each shopper's "pain point." That's not a market. That's a trap.
This isn't just inflation. Corporate America has developed new tools to squeeze every last dollar from consumers, and the law hasn't kept up. Shared pricing software lets competitors coordinate prices without a phone call. AI "shopping assistants" steer people toward higher-cost items. Comparison shopping is nearly impossible when the price you see depends on whether you're logged in, what app you're using, or how desperate your data profile says you are. Ninety pieces of legislation are moving through states and cities right now to address this — federal action needs to match that urgency.
The FTC has received roughly 1,000 public comments on surveillance pricing regulation. That's real constituent pressure. Ban the use of shared algorithmic pricing tools, require AI shopping tools to serve consumers not corporations, and update consumer protection law for the e-commerce era. Prices are the top issue for Americans and have been since 2022. This is the moment to act.
