Utah Supporting Trump’s ending birthright citizenship is deplorable

To: Gov. Cox, Rep. Lisonbee, Sen. Stevenson

From: A constituent in Clearfield, UT

February 5

The endorsement of Trump's executive order challenging birthright citizenship is a disturbing affront to American values and the Constitution. Utah's role in supporting this unconstitutional measure undermines its commitment to immigrants. The 14th Amendment unambiguously guarantees citizenship to all persons born on U.S. soil, a principle upheld by over a century of legal precedent. Attempting to revoke this through executive fiat disregards the separation of powers and Congress's authority to enact such a profound change. Furthermore, vilifying immigrant mothers and inflating costs associated with immigration promotes harmful xenophobia. Utah should withdraw its support for this order and reaffirm its identity as a welcoming community that respects human rights and the rule of law.
