I’m writing to you again—this time with undeniable evidence. Months ago, I warned you about the mistreatment of pregnant women in ICE detention. Now, rights groups have confirmed what we feared: women are being shackled during miscarriages, denied prenatal care, and held in conditions that threaten both maternal and fetal life.
This is happening in Arizona. The Florence and Eloy Detention Centers—right here in our state—have been flagged for medical neglect and inhumane treatment. Pregnant asylum seekers apprehended at our border are being transferred to these facilities, where they report being denied basic care and subjected to trauma.
If you claim to value life, then this is your moment to act. Because what’s happening is not pro-life—it’s institutional cruelty. It’s a betrayal of every principle we claim to uphold about dignity, care, and human rights.
What You Must Do—Right Here in Arizona:
• Introduce or support legislation banning the detention of pregnant individuals in any Arizona-operated or contracted facility.
• Demand audits and public oversight of Florence and Eloy Detention Centers, with a focus on medical care and treatment of pregnant detainees.
• Require public reporting on the number and condition of pregnant detainees held in Arizona.
• Support community-based alternatives to detention, including housing and prenatal care programs for pregnant immigrants.
• Partner with Arizona-based legal and advocacy groups to ensure detainees have access to medical and legal support.
This is not just a federal issue. Arizona has the power—and the responsibility—to act. I will be watching closely to see whether you choose to lead or remain complicit.
