I am writing to urge you to take a strong public stand against Christian Nationalism and the growing threat it poses to our constitutional democracy and the rights of all Americans.
John Pavlovitz, a former pastor with 30 years of experience in local churches including Bible Belt megachurches, recently issued an urgent warning based on his insider knowledge of the white Evangelical movement. His assessment is clear: conservative white Evangelicals have abandoned the teachings of Jesus and are waging what he calls a "Christian Nationalist holy war" that threatens to transform America into a theocracy.
The stakes are concrete and immediate. If Christian Nationalists consolidate power across all three branches of government, specific groups will lose equality under the law. Women will permanently lose bodily autonomy and potentially the right to vote. LGBTQ people will lose the right to marry and adopt. People of color will face exclusion from the electoral process. Immigrants will be denied access to opportunity and refuge. Non-Christians, including Muslims, will face systematic discrimination.
These are not hypothetical scenarios but stated intentions of a movement that is closer than ever to achieving its goals. History shows us the horrors that unchecked religious extremism produces, and we cannot afford to ignore these warning signs.
I am asking you to publicly oppose Christian Nationalism in your official capacity. This means speaking out against theocratic policies, defending the separation of church and state, and protecting the constitutional rights of all Americans regardless of their religion, gender, sexual orientation, or immigration status. Build coalitions across party lines with other legislators who recognize this threat.
This is about preserving our Constitution and the most elemental freedoms we deserve to keep. The vast majority of decent Americans, including progressive Christians, have the power to defeat this movement if our elected officials lead with courage and moral clarity.
