Stop the Wasteful Destruction of $10 Million in U.S.-Funded Contraceptives

To: Sen. Moody, Sen. Scott

From: A constituent in Jacksonville, FL

July 26

I am writing to express deep concern over the recent decision by the U.S. government to destroy nearly $10 million worth of contraceptives stored in Belgium — at an additional taxpayer cost of over $160,000. These contraceptives — including intrauterine devices, implants, and pills — were purchased with U.S. taxpayer dollars and intended to support women’s health in developing countries. The decision to incinerate them, despite offers from international health organizations to distribute or rebrand them at no cost to the government, is both fiscally irresponsible and ethically troubling. The products reportedly do not expire until between 2027 and 2031. Disposing of them is not only wasteful, but it also undermines public health efforts globally. It sends the wrong message about our country’s commitment to efficient, life-saving foreign aid — and about our stewardship of taxpayer resources. I urge you to speak out against this destruction and demand accountability for the agencies and decision-makers responsible. I also ask you to support or introduce legislation to prevent similar actions in the future, ensuring that U.S.-funded medical aid is used to improve lives — not wasted in the name of ideology. Please help protect both fiscal responsibility and global public health. I look forward to your response.
