Enact robust personal data privacy regulations now

June 17, 2025

After reviewing the troubling details about the alleged role of data broker sites in aiding the suspect's violent attack, it is clear that unregulated access to personal information poses a severe public safety risk. While a ban on data brokers may seem extreme, strong legislative action is urgently needed to protect the privacy and wellbeing of all citizens. Reasonable personal data privacy regulations should be enacted to prevent the malicious misuse of people's sensitive information. At a minimum, strict guidelines must govern what details can be collected and sold by data brokers, with heavy penalties for violations. Individuals should also have the right to know what information is available about them and the ability to opt-out. This tragic incident underscores how easily available personal data can be exploited for nefarious purposes when there are no safeguards in place. Decisive steps must be taken to strike an appropriate balance between privacy rights and legitimate data needs. Failing to implement robust protections will continue jeopardizing lives. Swift bipartisan cooperation on this pressing issue is imperative for upholding both security and civil liberties.
