I am writing as a concerned Colorado resident who is deeply troubled by the increasingly aggressive redistricting tactics being used in states like Texas, Florida, and other Republican-controlled legislatures to cement political power for decades, often at the expense of fair representation. If Colorado does not take proactive measures now, we risk losing our ability to ensure that our values—such as protecting voting rights, safeguarding reproductive freedom, addressing the climate crisis, and defending marginalized communities—are represented at every level of government. While other states are openly manipulating district boundaries to favor one party, Colorado cannot afford to be naïve. If we allow ourselves to play by rules that others are actively breaking, we will be unprepared when federal power shifts and those hostile to our values control national policy. This is not simply a partisan matter—it’s about defending democracy from coordinated efforts to undermine it. We should move swiftly to: • Use every legal and procedural tool available during redistricting to ensure districts reflect the will of Colorado voters, not the ambitions of extremist politicians in other states. • Prioritize maps that protect progressive majorities in both state and federal representation. • Guard against future attempts by bad actors to reverse the progress Colorado has made. Other states have already demonstrated that fair representation is not guaranteed—it is something that must be actively defended. Waiting until the next redistricting cycle may be too late. The time to act is now, before national forces use their power to reshape our state in their image. I urge you to begin exploring every available path—legislative, procedural, and legal—to secure district maps that preserve Colorado’s values and protect against the anti-democratic gerrymandering we’re seeing elsewhere.
