Consider balanced approach to cannabis law reform efforts

To: Sen. Sabb, Rep. Anderson, Gov. McMaster

From: A constituent in Georgetown, SC

April 20

As a patient with chronic pain, I urge you to carefully consider legalizing medical marijuana to provide relief and an alternative to opioids. The issue continues to be debated, with several states proposing reforms. Indiana has bills to decriminalize possession (HB 1145) and legalize a medical program (HB 1178). Kentucky has decriminalization (SB 33) and adult-use ballot measures (SB 36). South Carolina's Compassionate Care Act (SB 53) would allow medical use for qualifying conditions. Georgia's HB 41 permits county decriminalization. Virginia's SB 970 would create a regulated retail market in 2026. While North Carolina failed last year, proponents aim to pass medical marijuana this session. A balanced public health and safety approach with robust regulation is needed as this complex issue evolves.
