SAVE Act

To: Sen. Kaine, Sen. Warner

From: A constituent in Alexandria, VA

February 13

I am your constituent in Alexandria. Please oppose the SAVE Act UNLESS it is amended to make any proof-of-citizenship requirement free and truly accessible. Citizenship verification is only fair when compliance is straightforward. REAL ID is not a universal fix; many REAL IDs do not indicate citizenship, and DMV access is not equal for non-drivers, rural residents, and people with disabilities. Many eligible citizens do not have passports, and obtaining certified records can cost money, require time off work, and depend on travel. I request that you either vote NO on this Act as written or amend it to include the following: - providing no-cost access to required documents for voting - allow completion without in-person DMV visits - include fail-safes for delays, name changes, and errors. If Congress mandates documentary proof, Congress should also guarantee a free, practical way for every eligible citizen to obtain it. Otherwise the burden falls on lawful voters least able to manage it. I look forward to hearing from you and request a written response.
