I am writing to state my objection to House Bill 1684: Irretrievable breakdown of marriage. The implications of this bill are staggering in how marriage will be considered by residents of this state and how this state's government is perceived by the rest of the country.
By requiring mutual agreement along with witness testimony, spouses and children will be, not may be, trapped with their abusers. Low income families will be burdened with unnecessary costs. There is no benefit in going back to the days when it requires outside parties to decide if a marriage is broken.
Passing this bill serves no purpose. It does not save marriages or provide stability for children. It creates the situation where marriage is a risk to be avoided.
Leave the fate of marriages where it belongs, with the couple who are living it.
