The US needs stronger consumer digital privacy regulations NOW

To: Sen. Warner, Rep. McGuire, Sen. Kaine

From: A verified voter in Earlysville, VA

March 15

The US needs stronger digital privacy laws regulating what information about customers companies are allowed to collect or retain. Amazon’s new policy of “always on” recording by its Echo devices is a prime example of corporate abuse of individual privacy. (Further details here: https://pluralistic.net/2025/03/15/altering-the-deal/#telescreen ) Private companies having access to this kind of data is also a security risk to the nation. Congress is so worried about TikTok collecting metadata, but are fine with Amazon collecting sensitive information like this without any regulation on how it can collect, retain, share, or safeguard it? We need stronger privacy regulations now about what types of data ANY company operating in the US is allowed to collect, whether it be through apps installed on phones or proprietary devices such as Amazon’s Echo. Please sponsor/support stronger consumer privacy regulations now.
