Protect and expand Social Security benefits by lifting the cap
To: Rep. Beyer
From: A constituent in Arlington, VA
November 18
As your constituent, I am writing to ask you to take specific action in the House to strengthen Social Security by lifting the payroll tax cap. This issue directly affects my family, as my parent will soon rely on Social Security for retirement security.
As a member of the House, you have several opportunities to advance this crucial reform:
- Introduce or co-sponsor legislation in the House to lift the Social Security tax cap
- Call for Ways and Means Committee hearings on Social Security's funding structure
- Join the House Expand Social Security Caucus if you haven't already
- Use your position to highlight this issue in House floor speeches and committee meetings
The current $168,600 cap is fundamentally unfair to your middle-class constituents in our district. A worker making $80,000 pays 6.2% of their entire income, while someone making $400,000 pays effectively only about 2.6%.
Will you commit to taking at least one of these concrete actions in the House to address the Social Security tax cap? This reform is essential for protecting my parent's retirement security and maintaining this vital program for all Americans in our district.
I would appreciate knowing which specific actions you plan to take on this issue.
